New Delhi: City forests at Mitraon, Alipur, Garhi Mandu and Jaunapur will be revamped to provide Delhiites a place for outing where they can enjoy nature with their families.
Delhi environment minister Gopal Rai on Tuesday said that of the total 19 city forests, four would be developed as world-class city forests. “These city forests will be developed in an eco-friendly model and their physical structure will not be tampered. Muram paths, drinking water, public facilities, meditation huts and amphitheatres will be available to the general public in these city forests. People can do research and improve the city forests based on their findings. It has been recommended that the forests be developed into an open museum or a living lab,” said Rai.
As the theme of the project is “Prakriti ke paas, parivar ke saath,” Rai said that the Delhi government is attempting to link all residents of Delhi with nature. “Saplings will be distributed for free to all the people through small nurseries of these city forests. Outdoor activities like bird watching, jungle walk activity, etc, will be included. An online portal will be developed to provide a common platform for those who want to do activities in the city forests,” said Rai.
The minister said the government would first hold a design or idea competition. The department is forming a steering committee for this purpose, which will be in charge of this project. “Our government wishes to provide a place to citizens where they can appreciate nature and also educate the next generation about it. The Kejriwal government is motivated to develop and maintain Delhi’s city forests on the basis of ecological security,” said Rai.
